CNLS awards achievers

KIGALI, November 18, Achievers of awards organized to encourage innovation in the fight against AIDS have vowed to inspire others to step up awareness campaigns. “I’m shot of words, but somehow I have to say something, I didn’t expect this award. It’s inspirational.”  Mr. Ali Kwizera of AIDS Relief made the remarks after he was recognized for conducting research on AIDS related issues. Mr. Kwizera said he had dedicated his award to Rwandan youths to encourage them to play more role in the fight against AIDS.

THE CONTEXT OF THE COUNTRY

According to national estimates, the total estimated number of people living with HIV in Rwanda was about 149,000 in 2008, including around 17,000 children (HIV Strategic Plan, 2008). According to the 2005 DHS, there are 1,350,820 orphans and vulnerable children in Rwanda between the ages of 0 and 17.

Justifications

Within the framework of universal access to HIV prevention, care and treatment and support services by 2012, Rwanda is achieving key milestones in the response to HIV epidemic in children . .

The theme of the 5th National Pediatric conference on children and AIDS is “Count Down to 2015 for children and HIV- Achieving the MDG6”.

Provide an appropriate overview of the current status and contribute to the achievement of MDG6 targets for children and HIV in Rwanda.

  • Understand and review the existing coordination and implementation mechanisms of the national response toward achieving MDG6 targets for children and HIV.
  • Explore and identify strategies and innovative approaches to address identified gaps around the 4 programmatic components of the national response for children and HIV.
  • Formulate recommendations with regard to targets, keys strategies and resources to be mobilized in order to achieve the MDG6 targets for children and HIV.


Through a participatory approach involving all the stakeholders, the current status of implementation of the four programmatic areas for children and HIV in Rwanda is reviewed and recommendations formulated to address weaknesses identified toward achieving MDG6 targets for children and HIV in Rwanda

Proposed conference venues include: Conference venue is SERENA Hotel. The venue shall offer conference facilities for about 350 participants including side rooms for round tables or Children sessions, as well as catering.
The Guest of Honor as well as the Key notes Speakers will be identified based on the theme of the conference.
The tentative budget for this conference is: 210,000 USD
