Representatives of children yesterday requested that they actively be involved in monitoring funds meant to educate vulnerable children at sector and lower levels of administration. The children made the remarks yesterday during the fifth national pediatrics conference at a session that sought to collect their views on how funds from development partners can reach the right beneficiaries.
“We should be involved in following up on how this money is used. This will enable equal and distribution of this money meant to pay fees for our colleagues. Otherwise it will end up in the wrong hands,” said Habimana Augustine, a child representative from Nyarugenge district.
Another child, Jean Nyiranzayino, a representative from Burera district, said that development partners who help vulnerable children should enforce coordination amongst themselves, to avoid different donors paying for one child and leaving many other needy ones yearning for assistance.
The children said that they should be tasked to compile lists of their needy counterparts, to make sure the money reaches them directly.
They also recommended there should be cooperative societies for children in rural areas where a bank account can be opened for vulnerable children as this would avoid the habit of money being carried to them by hand.
The children also requested that they be given the powers to expose public officials who mismanage funds meant to help their vulnerable counterparts, and that serious punishments should be given to those officials.
